Zakynthos - An Underwater Paradise
The underwater landscapes are as diverse as the island's landscapes. Laganas Bay consists of a predominantly sandy seabed, whereas the west coast and the island of Marathonisi, in particular, are crisscrossed by steep underwater cliffs and caves. Snorkeling or diving equipment are ideal for exploring the underwater world.
Visibility is very good underwater thanks to the clear water, making it easy to observe the underwater fauna around Zakynthos. In addition to the Caretta-Caretta sea turtles, you can also see squid, lobsters, rays, and lionfish, among others.
When engaging in water activities, you should always respect nature conservation. Especially in areas with sea turtles, you should be careful and avoid touching or even chasing the animals. Some don't mind being observed, while others swim away quickly, so you should let them go.
Here are our tips for the best snorkeling spots on Zakynthos:
1. Marathonisi (Turtle Island): Marathonisi is located in the southeast of Zakynthos and is situated in Laganas Bay. There are numerous spots around the island that are ideal for snorkeling. There are sandy and rocky areas, as well as some caves worth swimming into. In addition to colorful schools of fish, we have also seen turtles, octopus, and lobsters here.
2. Korakonissi: Korakonissi is located on the west coast of Zakynthos and is known for its spectacular rock formations that frame the crystal-clear waters. The impressive natural stone arch and jagged cliffs make this spot a unique snorkeling area. With a bit of luck, you might even spot monk seals here.
3. Porto Limnionas: Porto Limnionas is also located on the west coast of Zakynthos and is surrounded by impressive cliffs. The rocky coastal landscape is perfect for underwater adventures. The turquoise water shimmers in various shades of blue depending on the sunlight, inviting you to discover the fascinating underwater world. The entry area is large, so there’s a high crowd factor. It is recommended to swim a little further out along the opposite coast. There are fewer people here, but therefor more activity underwater.
4. Filippoi Beach: Filippoi Beach is located on the northwest coast of Zakynthos and is less frequented than other beaches. The beach is surrounded by imposing rock formations that are not only impressive above water, but continue underwater in the form of caves and crevices. The natural beauty of this secluded bay makes it a paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. Excursion boats traveling between Shipwreck Beach and the Blue Caves occasionally stop here, what makes it at times a bit busier. It is recommended to snorkel along the rocks sloping into the sea on the left.
