Marathonisi Island is located in Laganas Bay, approximately opposite Limni Keriou Beach, and is one of the breeding grounds of the “Caretta-Caretta” sea turtles of Zakynthos. As if that wasn’t enough, the silhouette of the island looks like a turtle when viewed from the southwest, which also gives it the nickname “Turtle Island”. Marathonisi consists mainly of rocks into which numerous caves have been carved.
In the north there is also a sandy beach that is used by sea turtles to lay their eggs. For this reason, only a narrow strip of the beach, approximately 5 meters wide, is allowed to access. To the rest of the island access is prohibited so that the sea turtle nests are not damaged.
The island can be reached by boat from anywhere in Laganas Bay. There are e.g. larger, organized day tours offered or you can rent a motorboat and drive to the island on your own. There is a snack boat near the island where you can buy ice cream and drinks.
